Who We Are

The first pilot Deep Recovery Course was run in 2018. In 2020 it was developed into the workbook-based course we have today, and with great success. Since then we have helped individuals overcome addiction and dramatically improve their mental health outcomes. More than that, they discovered a God who loves them, and spiritual practices that transform their lives. They have discovered faith, interior freedom, and meaningful and sustaining relationships.

From a clinical perspective, the Deep Recovery Course is unique. Because of its dual focus on Faith and Neurobiology, every chapter builds on the next to establish secure attachment from the outset, reestablishes the schema of identity in a positive way, introduces cognitive behavioral therapies in a new model of recovery, establishes transformative mindfulness and grounding skills taken from faith-based practices, uncovers cognitive distortions and self-diminishing behaviors, and ends in reestablishing a sense of community. Taking advantage of neuroplasticity, each step in the process uniquely targets and begins to heal areas of the brain that have been impaired by trauma.

Deep Recovery goes beyond trauma though. What is most important and most meaningful is that it reestablishes in each participant a relationship with the God who loves them, healing religious trauma.  They learn how to pray in ways that support healing, discover new meaning, new confidence, joy and what we call "interior liberty" - the freedom to be and act without all of the pain and mental exhaustion that has characterized their lives before.  And the best part, an ongoing relationship with God and healthy relationships with others.

the course

Our courses are run by course leaders that have completed a 3-Day Intensive Training and follow the Deep Recovery Workbook. It is open to everyone, regardless of gender, faith or background.

Deep Recovery brings together the power of faith-based methods, informed by some of the latest neurobiology, and strengthened with effective tools that can be applied in your life.

Our unique approach covers a broad range of problems; from substance abuse and pornography addiction, to less obvious but prevalent conditions like anxiety and obsessive thinking. Few problems fall outside our approach.

Class sizes are relatively small and confidentiality is strictly enforced. Discussion is always present and forward focused, not focused on the past. Details about the details of events are not shared openly. In this way, the focus remains on moving forward and staying with the present, rather than revisiting and dwelling on the past.

Our focus is on developing skills to move forward and "rewire" new behaviors and thinking.

Portrait of Smiling Man

John

Before I started DR, I was lost, hopeless. I was stuck in self-destructive patterns of thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. My whole sense of self was broken and my ego shattered. I was ready to end my life. I hit my knees and asked God to send me a life-line. I tried other recovery programs and methods and knew I needed something new and different. Deep Recovery was that lifeline that God gave me.

I would love to say the first time around, I gained control of it all. But I knew that I finally discovered something that started transformation at my core! It began a process, and now I have attended three, 12-week courses. First, I started to become aware of the false beliefs that were the "operating systems" of my life. Then I learned a number of tools that gave me back control over myself.

After about 15 months of working Deep Recovery, I have gained some much needed healing and freedom from the thoughts and behaviors that kept me stuck for so long. I am beyond grateful to both God and Fr. Matthew. For the first time, I am truly proud of man I am becoming.

Portrait of a Young Man

Anton

At this time last year, my world had completely fallen apart. I’d moved to a new place, started a new job, and enrolled in a Master’s degree program at a nearby university. Although I’d wanted desperately to succeed in my plans, all the big changes were too much. My dark thoughts and anxiety were so overwhelming, that within weeks, I’d quit my job and withdrawn from the university. I was devastated, and the anxiety soon turned into a deep state of despair.

Fortunately, before I moved, I’d looked for a new church. An internet search led me to Trinity Anglican Church. I read the descriptions of the church’s core beliefs and values, and I liked what I saw. When I discovered that there was a class for people dealing with trauma, I decided to check it out.

The Deep Recovery program turned out to be just the right thing at the right time. My problems did not miraculously disappear. But as I started to feel relief from the worst symptoms, I discovered underlying themes and core beliefs that powered my anxiety and depression. A year since my first Deep Recovery class (I have attended it two more times consecutively) Things are getting better, and in those moments when they still seem tough, I can lean on God and find hope.

A popular Christian song asks, “Have you come to the end of yourself?” When I found myself in the depths of despair, and I couldn’t put myself back together, I think I began to come to the end of myself. I began to ask myself what I really believe, and whether it works. God does work. Faith works. Community works.

I heartily endorse the Deep Recovery program. You have nothing to lose – and who knows what you might gain?
